Leadership: Positive Internal Communications

To be an effective Chief Officer you must be visible and applicable to the members of the department (this post deals with internal communications only).  I use the phrase “Management by Walking Around” what this means is the Chief Officer need to interact with internal stakeholders of the department.  There are many ways to accomplish this simple but important task.

  • Visit fire station and facilities and meet with the crews
  • Develop a internal departmental newsletter
  • Hold monthly “Chief Breakfast” where members can meet with the chief
  • Develop committees to assist with projects, i.e. apparatus committer, policy committee etc.

These are just a few examples of how a Chief Officer can improve internal communications.  We must never forget that the firefighter and civilian member of the department are the most important asset of the department.
